Workplace Injury, Illness Rates Decline for Fifth Straight Year

The likelihood of private industry workers being injured on the job declined for the fifth consecutive year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated in a Nov. 9 report. The rate for state and local government workers also declined, according to BLS.

Overwhelming Majority of Employees See Link Between Wellbeing and Performance

According to its 2017 Survey, Aon Employee Benefits claims that 96% of employers see a direct correlation between employee health, wellbeing and performance. Employers are also looking to strike a balance among the four widely accepted core pillars of health and wellbeing - Emotional, Physical, Social and Financial.

Lack of Sleep Can Cause Mental Lapses Similar to Alcohol Intoxication

Sleep deprivation may disturb brain cells and trigger temporary mental lapses that affect memory and visual perception, according to a recent study from researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles. The National Sleep Foundation suggests adults get seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

Joint-Employer Bill Could Affect Workplace Safety

A bill passed last week by the House would make companies no longer liable for safety and other violations committed by their subcontractors. Republicans say the change would bring about a reasonable standard. Democrats said its narrow definition of joint-employer eliminates accountability for some companies.

Occupational Health, Environmental Protections the Focus of New Public Health Policies

APHA adopted 13 new policy statements during its annual meeting. Six of the 13 new statements address occupational and environmental health topics, indicating strong interest by APHA members in federal and state advocacy on these social determinants of health.

NTSB Says Feds Failing to Keep Unsafe Drivers Off Roads

A sleep-deprived driver operating a motorcoach during early morning hours on a California highway caused a crash that killed four of the 24 passengers, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in a report released this week. They say it's time that the FMCSA move more aggressively to keep unsafe carriers off roadways.

Four in Ten Healthcare Professionals Work While Sick

A new study suggests that healthcare professionals (HCPs) should heed to their own advice: stay home when sick. The statistics are alarming. At least one study has shown that patients who are exposed to a healthcare worker who is sick are five times more likely to get a healthcare-associated infection.

How Well Do We Perceive Other People's Stress Levels in the Workplace

A new study finds that people often project their own experiences with stress onto their colleagues and employees, causing miscommunication and, often, missed opportunities. This study is the first to show that our own psychological mindset determines how we judge other peoples' responses to stress.
