Health, Not Work, Most Common Stress

Nearly half of Americans surveyed reported that health issues were the most stressful event in the past year

A new NPR/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) poll released today that examines the role of stress in Americans’ lives finds that about half of the public (49%) reported that they had a major stressful event or experience in the past year. Nearly half (43%) reported that the most stressful experiences related to health.

More than half of those who experienced a great deal of stress in the past month say too many overall responsibilities and financial problems were contributors (54% and 53% respectively). More than a third of those with a great deal of stress say the contributors include their own health problems (38%) and health problems of family members (37%).

Occupational Health of Low-Wage Workers

As low-wage jobs continue to show strong gains since the recession, research findings offer insight into how these jobs affect public health

As low-wage jobs continue to show strong gains since the recession, findings from the Low-Wage Workers’ Health Project led by Upstate Medical University is offering insight into how these jobs affect public health and the economy in Syracuse, N.Y., and reflect national trends in issues related to low-wage workers.

The project itself is serving as the springboard for more initiatives that will lead to a better understanding of the needs and risks of low-wage workers. Outcomes of these initiatives should stimulate social, legal and political changes needed to reduce risks to occupational health and improve the quality of work-life in Syracuse.

The Low-Wage Workers’ Health Project was led by Upstate’s CNY Occupational Health Clinical Centers (OHCC). It was funded by the Workforce Development Institute and OHCC.

Benefit Providers Help with Absences

External health benefits providers and employers can do a great deal to ensure their employees remain fit, healthy and able to work

A sickness absence policy should encompass the three Ps: preventive, proactive and provision. The most helpful absence policies are those implemented for all staff from day one of joining. The element that ismost important from day one is “preventive.”

There are a lot of tools available to employers to help with prevention, including health-awareness days, “bring-an-apple-to-work” days, employee assistance programmes (EAPs) and developing an absence policy. External health benefits providers, including insurance companies and occupational health service providers, will help with some of these, while others can be instigated by the employer.

A Guide to Using Smartphones and Tablets in Occupational Health

More healthcare professionals are using apps as innovative ways of accessing information to help improve the quality of healthcare delivery

The use of smartphones and computer tablets is growing at an astonishing rate. Business Insider recently suggested that nearly 20% of the world’s population owns a smartphone, and nearly one in 17 owns a tablet.

Industry experts (Jahns, 2010) estimate that approximately 500 million individuals will be using mobile devices by 2015. With this comes the availability of a vast array of information at the touch of a screen in the form of applications, also known as “apps”. All the user needs is a way of accessing the internet, either through a data connection from a mobile telephone provider or access to a Wi-Fi network.

Surveys Show the Value of Occupational Health in the Workplace

The value of occupational health (OH) within the workplace has been highlighted by a number of surveys and research.

A “white paper” by consultancy Cigna, Health and wellbeing – an employer’s perspective, found that more than half of employers polled (57%) offered OH, with 63% offering employee assistance programmes and 53% private medical insurance.

Four out of 10 employers also said they were looking to invest further in health and wellbeing benefits. More than a quarter had also experienced employees being off work for extended periods while they waited for NHS treatment.

Separately, research from the CBI and Medicash has made the case that there are clear business benefits to supporting employee health and wellbeing.

Wellness Programs & Small Businesses

Employees at small businesses are less likely to have access to worksite wellness programs

Employees at small businesses are less likely to have access to worksite wellness programs, according to a research review in the May Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).

But smaller companies that can overcome the barriers and implement wellness programs can realize achieve meaningful improvements in employee health, report Kira McCoy, BA, of Hampshire College, Amherst, Mass., and colleagues. They write, “Preventative health initiatives and disease management receive less attention in small business, yet are equally important for clinical implications of working American’s health.”

Smokeless Tobacco Use Holds Steady

Mining, construction fields hotbeds for snuff

Cigarette smoking continues to decline among Americans who work, but use of smokeless tobacco — a known cause of cancer — has held steady since 2005, U.S. health officials reported Thursday.

Looking at tobacco use over five years, the researchers found a decline in cigarette smoking among working adults — from about 22 percent in 2005 to 19 percent in 2010. But use of smokeless tobacco products such as chewing tobacco and snuff inched up slightly — from 2.7 percent in 2005 to 3 percent in 2010.

Stand Up During Meetings

Study found teams that met in rooms without chairs shared more ideas

Need to get more out of routine office meetings? Getting colleagues to stand up during those gatherings might help, new research suggests.

The new study included teams who were given 30 minutes to develop and record a university recruitment video. Some groups did this in rooms with chairs around a table while others had no chairs.

Implications of Mandatory Flu Shots

Vaccination rates among health care workers are less than 50%, despite patient health benefits

Evidence indicates that vaccination of health care workers can benefit patient health, leading to a move by many to consider mandatory influenza vaccination as a condition of employment or to require employees to wear a mask during influenza season. However, in Canada, condition-of-service policies must comply with employment law, provincial human rights codes and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Workplace Bullying & Health Problems

New research into bullying focuses on the relationship between social pain and physical pain

Over the last decade, the subject of bullying has become a topic of academic interest, as scientists and social scientists delve into the psychological and physiological effects for both the bullied and the bully.

Clarkson University Psychology Professor Jennifer Knack is one of these researchers. Her research into bullying focuses on the relationship between social pain and physical pain.
“My work seeks to understand why some people who are bullied get sick and others don’t,” she says. “Is it a personality factor? Or is it something in their bodies? If we can learn who is at risk of developing health problems and come up with ways of intervening, we can reduce risk of physical health problems.”

Obese Employees Cost Employers More

Obesity is just one of several modifiable risk factors in the workplace — but one that’s becoming worse

A new study in the American Journal of Health Promotion finds that, on average, a morbidly obese employee costs an employer over $4,000 more per year in health care and related costs than an employee who is of normal weight.

The results of this study should not be used to discriminate against overweight and obese employees, given that two-thirds of all Americans are overweight or obese — such a tactic would significantly diminish the pool of qualified employees. Employers need to invest in robust, comprehensive health promotion programs for their employees that include physical activity, healthy eating, stress and depression management, and control of blood pressure and diabetes.

Solvents Linked to Memory Problems

Study of French retirees shows those exposed even decades ago scored worse on tests

A new study of French power company retirees finds that those who were exposed to solvents and benzene on the job — even decades earlier — were more likely to score poorly on memory and thinking tests.

The findings don’t directly confirm that the chemicals harmed the mental powers of the former workers, and it was not clear if those with more thinking problems face more issues getting through their day-to-day lives.

But the research does point to potential harm from the chemicals, said study lead author Erika Sabbath, a research fellow with the Harvard School of Public Health.

Workplace Ladder Falls a Major Matter

There were 113 ladder-related deaths, and more than 34,000 ER-treated injuries in 2011 alone

Workplace tumbles off of ladders are a major cause of injury and death among American employees, a new study says.

“Falls remain a leading cause of unintentional injury [deaths] nationwide, and 43 percent of fatal falls in the last decade have involved a ladder,” say a team led by Christina Socias of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

How Loud is Too Loud at the Workplace

Each of these elements is critical to ensure that workers are being protected where noise levels are unable to be reduced below the OSHA required levels

Every year, approximately 30 million people in the United States are occupationally exposed to hazardous noise. Noise-related hearing loss has been listed as one of the most prevalent occupational health concerns in the United States for more than 25 years.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that all worker exposures to noise should be controlled below a level equivalent to 85 dBA for eight hours to minimize occupational noise induced hearing loss. Read the Full Article for what can be done to reduce the hazard from noise.

A Simple Method to Justify Occupational Health Cost Effectiveness

Occupational health practitioners are now regularly being asked to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of the service they provide

In addition to requiring the skills and expertise to improve employee wellbeing, prevent workplace ill health and detect workplace disease early through health surveillance, OH professionals need to be knowledgeable regarding business drivers.

OH suppliers have to justify the benefits and costs of their service, often using the immediate tangible elements that result. Such tangible elements include reduced absence costs, reduced overtime/agency staff costs, increased productivity, reduced insurance costs and reduced staff turnover. Less tangible benefits include improved quality of workplace experience, improved wellbeing, increased staff morale and engagement. Read the Full Article about a simple method of providing cost justification for an OH service.

Health Promotion That Leads to Change: What is the Best Approach?

Getting workplace health promotions right takes more than just a roadshow, says occupational health nurse practitioner

The effectiveness of health promotion in the workplace is difficult to determine because of the lack of high-quality research in this area. Evidence shows that a one-size-fits-all approach to interventions is not effective, and most research recommends targeted efforts with an understanding of the views of employees.

An appreciation of how difficult it is to achieve the public health targets we so readily quote, in the context of working life, may also aid the development of interventions to sustain long-term healthy behavior. Read the Full Article for:

  • What are the barriers to employees adopting healthy behaviours?
  • Does the workplace and type of work have some influence on the ability to implement change?

Professional Musicians Face Greater Risk of Hearing Problems

Threat of hearing loss was nearly four times higher, and risk of tinnitus also increased

Professional musicians face a nearly four times greater risk of developing hearing loss compared to the rest of the public, according to new research.

Musicians are also 57 percent more likely to develop ringing in the ears — known as tinnitus — because of their exposure to loud noise, suggests the study published online April 30 in the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine.

Creative Activities Outside of Work May Help Boost Your Job Performance

Study finds association between self-expression, improved problem-solving skills

Creative activities outside of work may help boost your job performance, a new study suggests.

Personal endeavors after-hours help employees recover from on-the-job demands and improve skills such as problem-solving, the researchers report in the April 17 issue of the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology.

Using a Treadmill While Working Can Enhance Employee Productivity

Researchers studied employees using treadmills instead of office chairs as they work.

Walking while you work may not only improve an employee’s health, it may also boost productivity, according to new research.

Researchers studied employees using treadmills instead of office chairs as they work. Their offices were refitted to have a computer, phone, and writing space on a desk in front of a treadmill to be operated by the employee at up to two mph. The results of the study were encouraging — the treadmills had a significantly favorable impact on both physical activity and work performance.

Police Officers Face Danger Far Worse than Anything on Law and Order

The public, and police themselves, may not realize they are exposed to unexpected dangers

“Police officers are exposed to danger from so many different elements — many of them unexpected — that they are dying not just on the job, but for the job,” says University at Buffalo epidemiologist John Violanti, PhD, an expert on police culture, psychological stress, illness and mortality.

And they are dying younger than the rest of us. A previous Violanti study found that on average, the life expectancy of police officers was significantly lower than the U.S. male population — a result, he suggests, of the exceptionally high and protracted degree of job-related stress.

Want Spring Allergy Relief? Avoid Stress

Stress doesn’t cause allergies, but easing your mind might mean fewer allergy flare-ups this spring

According to a study published in the April issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, the scientific journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, allergy sufferers with persistent stress experience more allergy flares.

“Stress can cause several negative effects on the body, including causing more symptoms for allergy sufferers,” said allergist Amber Patterson, MD, lead study author and ACAAI member. “Our study also found those with more frequent allergy flares also have a greater negative mood, which may be leading to these flares.

Smoke-Free Policies Protect the Heart

Hospitalizations for heart disease, stroke dipped after Michigan passed workplace smoking ban

A new study finds that hospitalizations for heart disease and stroke dipped slightly in Michigan after the state cracked down on smoking in bars and restaurants.

But researchers can’t say whether the smoking ban was directly responsible for the drop in hospitalizations because other factors could have caused the dip.

While it’s hard to know for certain whether smoking bans actually affect hospitalization rates, other studies have suggested that they can have an impact, the researchers noted.

Stimulating Jobs Keep You Sharp

Mentally challenging work gives people a sharper mind long after retirement

Jobs that make good use of your intellect might have another benefit down the line — a sharper mind long after retirement.

People with jobs that require problem solving, planning and information analysis appear more likely to retain a clear memory and keen reasoning as they grow older, said lead author Gwen Fisher, an assistant professor of psychology at Colorado State University.
