Obesity Linked to Low Endurance

A new study investigated the ergonomic effects of obesity-related functional performance impairment

A new study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (JOEH) found that workers who are obese may have significantly shorter endurance times when performing workplace tasks, compared with their non-obese counterparts.

The study, conducted at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., examined the endurance of 32 individuals who completed three distinct tasks that involved a range of upper extremity demands – hand grip, intermittent shoulder elevation, and a simulated assembly operation. Each task involved periods of work and rest and included pacing demands similar to those experienced by workers in manufacturing settings. The individual were divided into four categories: non-obese young, obese young, non-obese older, and obese older.

Shift Work Tied to Type 2 Diabetes

Shift workers may be at higher risk for type 2 diabetes compared to people not on such schedules

Shift workers, especially men, may be at higher risk for type 2 diabetes compared to people not on such schedules, a new study suggests. Also at special risk are shift workers who don’t work on a set schedule, with shifts moving around at various times of the day.

The findings are “not at all surprising,” said one expert, Dr. Alan Manevitz, a clinical psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

“Physicians have long known that working shifts disrupts many key body chemicals, creating a ripple effect that can lead to ailments such as gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disease and even cancer,” he said. “Now type 2 diabetes can be added to this considerable list.”

In the new review, researchers analyzed data from 12 international studies involving more than 226,500 people.

Nursing Shortage May Be Less Serious

Delayed retirement of experienced nurses and surge in new nursing graduates ease predicted shortage

The nation’s supply of registered nurses has been growing faster than expected, largely because baby boomers in nursing are working longer than ever before, according to a new study.

Due to both the delayed retirement of experienced nurses and a surge in new nursing graduates, there were almost 3 million nurses in the United States in 2012, about half a million more than estimated a decade ago.

Exactly why baby boomer nurses aren’t retiring isn’t known. But it could be that they are part of a trend among other Americans, particularly women, said David Auerbach, senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation in Boston.
