Office Workers, On Your Feet!

Desk jockeys should make a point to stand up for at least two hours during the workday in order to avoid the negative health consequences linked to too much sitting, new research suggests.

Gradually break up periods of prolonged sitting until you’re on your feet four hours a day, advises a panel of international experts. Aside from taking regular walks throughout the workday, desk-bound employees can opt for sit-stand desks or workstations that require them to stand.

The recommendations are based on an analysis of research that links prolonged periods spent seated with a heightened risk of serious illness and premature death.

Musculoskeletal Disorders in the Workplace: Role of HR and Managers

Each year, 140 million working days are lost to sickness absence. Approximately 60% of this absence is due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as back pain, or upper and lower limb pain. Who should manage the return to work or full duties of an employee who has had an MSD? How do they make decisions with regard to the type of work that this employee could be doing, and how quickly they can return to full duties? What happens if the return to work fails?

Safety 2015: What CEOs Want From Safety Executives

In his June 10 session during Safety 2015, “Business Lessons: What CEOs and the C-Suite Want From Safety,” Mark Hansen, P.E., CSP, CPE, CPSA, CPEA, shared what he learned during a career spanning many jobs, roles and industries in which he interfaced with CEOs and other senior leaders. So what does it take to be a successful safety executive? According to Hansen, there are several attributes successful safety leaders should have if they want to be an asset to the organization and be recognized for their contribution to the company. Chief among these assets is the ability to communicate with the CEO.

How To Motivate Employees Through the Language of Workplace Safety

What sounds better: a workplace driven by a constant fear of imperfection or an environment that accepts failure as a necessary stop on the way to improvement? Seems like an easy choice. So why have organizations spent decades pushing safety programs that promote the former rather than the latter?

Zero-injury goals have long been a central part of workplace safety strategies. But over the past several years, industry-wide concern over the concept of “zero” has initiated a rather dramatic shift. Many companies now are focusing on developing a culture of safety built on encouraging safe behaviors rather than pursuing the mirage of a zero-injury workplace.

Virginia Governor Signs the Voluntary Protection Programs Act

On June 3, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe signed the historic Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Act in Virginia. The bill will continue developing the successful VPP system, which encourages companies to take safety above and beyond OSHA requirements. Sen. Kenneth Alexander (D-Norfolk) and Delegate G. Manoli Loupassi (R-Richmond), co-sponsored the bill, which passed unanimously in the general assembly.
