New Framework for Integrating and Measuring Health and Safety Programs

(ACOEM) The overall well-being of American workers could be significantly improved through adoption of a new framework for integrating health and safety strategies in the workplace — including use of a standardized index for measuring their business value, a new paper suggests.

Recommended Levels of Activity Rarely Achieved in Busy Workplace

European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Even a busy job may not provide enough exercise to meet current activity recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, according to a study. Note: 6000-7000 steps per day appears to constitute a healthy adult’s normal day, excluding planned exercise.

Employers and Workers Can Join Forces to Keep Diabetes Under Control

(Springer Science+Business Media) People with diabetes who enroll in a health plan tailored to their medical condition are more likely to stick to their medication and actively take charge of their own health care, research into the effectiveness of the Diabetes Health Plan finds.

Biking, Walking to Work Can Help Shed Pounds

Leaving your car at home and cycling, walking or using public transit to get to work could help you lose weight, according to a new study. The findings were published online May 7 in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.

Nurses Cut Stress 40 Percent with Relaxation Steps at Work

(Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center) It’s estimated that one million people a day miss work in the United States because they’re too stressed out. To help lower stress in the workplace, researchers conducted a study with staff members in a surgical intensive care unit. They found that a few simple on-the-job relaxation techniques cut stress levels by 40 percent and lowered the risk of burnout.

Shift Work Linked to Health Problems

Shift work may harm your health, a new study warns. Researchers examined data on nearly 1,600 people in Wisconsin, comparing the health of shift workers with those who worked a 9-to-5 schedule. The results showed that shift workers were more likely to be overweight than people who didn’t do shift work — 48 percent vs. 35 percent. Shift workers were also around 10 percent more likely to have sleep problems, get too little sleep, and be excessively sleepy.

Bystander CPR Linked to Better Return-to-Work Outcomes After Cardiac Arrest

New research from Denmark finds that more cardiac arrest survivors are returning to work, because more bystanders are performing CPR. “We already know CPR helps save lives — and now our findings suggest there is even more benefit in performing it,” study author Dr. Kristian Kragholm, a clinical assistant at Aalborg University Hospital and Aarhus University in Aalborg, said in an American Heart Association (AHA) news release. He is also a fellow at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, N.C.

Adults With Autism Fare Poorly in Job Interviews, Study Finds

“High-functioning” adults with autism may face significant communication challenges that could make landing a job difficult, new research from Canada suggests. The finding is based on an audio-analysis that examined the conversational skills of the adults as they embarked on a series of job interviews.
