Delivering an Effective Employee Wellbeing Strategy: Why It Matters

Workplace wellbeing is often regarded as a “fluffy” term by business leaders, but employee wellbeing strategy is rising up the corporate agenda as smart companies begin to realize what it can bring to employee engagement and the bottom line. This article offers some practical tips on how to deliver an effective wellbeing program.

Stand-up Solution: Sit-stand Desk Users Sit Less, Burn More Calories

According to a new University of Iowa study, employees with sit-stand desks stood 60 minutes more a day at work compared to their co-workers with sitting desks, and they continued to do so long after their newfangled desks lost their novelty. Plus, the sit-stand desk users walked an additional six minutes a day at work.

A Walk Around the Office Can Reverse Vascular Dysfunction

Across the country, many employees are seated at desks for the majority of an eight-hour workday. As technology creates an increase in sedentary lifestyles, the impact of sitting on vascular health is a rising concern. Now, researchers have found that by walking for just 10 minutes after a prolonged period of sitting, vascular health can be restored.

Is Technology the Answer to Computer-related Stress?

With computers and mobile devices the norm in today’s workplace, computer-related stress is a risk for employers keen to keep productivity levels up and sickness absence down. But technology can also provide an answer to some of these problems.

Sleep Better and Boost Productivity

A good night’s sleep is a fundamental part of our health and wellbeing, and means we are more alert and productive during the day. So why do so many of us find it hard to achieve? This article shares expert advice on how to help employees improve their sleep routine.

Office Workers, On Your Feet!

Desk jockeys should make a point to stand up for at least two hours during the workday in order to avoid the negative health consequences linked to too much sitting, new research suggests.

Gradually break up periods of prolonged sitting until you’re on your feet four hours a day, advises a panel of international experts. Aside from taking regular walks throughout the workday, desk-bound employees can opt for sit-stand desks or workstations that require them to stand.

The recommendations are based on an analysis of research that links prolonged periods spent seated with a heightened risk of serious illness and premature death.

Musculoskeletal Disorders in the Workplace: Role of HR and Managers

Each year, 140 million working days are lost to sickness absence. Approximately 60% of this absence is due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as back pain, or upper and lower limb pain. Who should manage the return to work or full duties of an employee who has had an MSD? How do they make decisions with regard to the type of work that this employee could be doing, and how quickly they can return to full duties? What happens if the return to work fails?

Safety 2015: What CEOs Want From Safety Executives

In his June 10 session during Safety 2015, “Business Lessons: What CEOs and the C-Suite Want From Safety,” Mark Hansen, P.E., CSP, CPE, CPSA, CPEA, shared what he learned during a career spanning many jobs, roles and industries in which he interfaced with CEOs and other senior leaders. So what does it take to be a successful safety executive? According to Hansen, there are several attributes successful safety leaders should have if they want to be an asset to the organization and be recognized for their contribution to the company. Chief among these assets is the ability to communicate with the CEO.

How To Motivate Employees Through the Language of Workplace Safety

What sounds better: a workplace driven by a constant fear of imperfection or an environment that accepts failure as a necessary stop on the way to improvement? Seems like an easy choice. So why have organizations spent decades pushing safety programs that promote the former rather than the latter?

Zero-injury goals have long been a central part of workplace safety strategies. But over the past several years, industry-wide concern over the concept of “zero” has initiated a rather dramatic shift. Many companies now are focusing on developing a culture of safety built on encouraging safe behaviors rather than pursuing the mirage of a zero-injury workplace.

Virginia Governor Signs the Voluntary Protection Programs Act

On June 3, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe signed the historic Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Act in Virginia. The bill will continue developing the successful VPP system, which encourages companies to take safety above and beyond OSHA requirements. Sen. Kenneth Alexander (D-Norfolk) and Delegate G. Manoli Loupassi (R-Richmond), co-sponsored the bill, which passed unanimously in the general assembly.

Workplace Ergonomics: Top Ten Tips for a Comfortable Workstation

The right workstation is critical for creating a safe and healthy work environment and can have a huge impact on all employees, especially those with a disability. The UK has a long tradition of health and safety legislation, but recent figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that 28.2 million working days are lost due to work-related illness or workplace injury each year. How we set up our workstations might be partly to blame for this.

Occupational Sun-safety Policies Examined for Colorado Workers

Outdoor workers are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation, often during the course of many years, and are at increased risk for skin cancer and ocular (eye) damage. Sun-safety policies have the potential to increase sun protection and skin cancer prevention remains a national priority. Workplaces are ideal locations to promote sun safety because many outdoor workers fail to use sun-safety practices, according to the study background.

You’re Driving Yourself to Burnout, Literally

Commuting length, distance, and means are stress factors that can lead to burnout, reports a new study. The research offers no surprises: the bigger the city, the more stressful the commute, at least for people travelling by car. However, people commuting towards rural areas are not entirely spared: those who take long trips in public transit feel less effective in the workplace.

Workplace Intervention Improves Sleep of Employees’ Children

A workplace intervention designed to reduce employees’ work-family conflict and increase schedule flexibility also has a positive influence on the sleep patterns of the employees’ children, researchers report.

Oil and Gas Industry Worker Death Rate Down by a Third

Even as the oil and gas extraction industry in the United States boomed, there was a decline in the rate of worker deaths, a new federal government study shows.

From 2003 to 2013, the oil and gas extraction industry workforce more than doubled and the number of drilling rigs increased 71 percent, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety said.

During that time, the number of oil and gas extraction industry worker deaths rose, but there was a 36 percent decrease in the rate of worker deaths.

Teaming Up Against Heat Hazards

Increased water breaks will increase employees’ performance. Employees need to be alert not only for their own safety, but for the safety of their co-workers, as well.

The Most Important Issue of Your Vision Protection Program

Make sure you have asked the right questions. And if you do not have time or do not want to do the dirty work, ask your safety committee to do this, they typically will be glad to help out.

Tips for Protecting Construction Workers’ Eyes in the Summer

Many workplaces implement guidelines above and beyond OSHA’s for the types of eye protection to be used based on the specific hazards that are present.

New Framework for Integrating and Measuring Health and Safety Programs

(ACOEM) The overall well-being of American workers could be significantly improved through adoption of a new framework for integrating health and safety strategies in the workplace — including use of a standardized index for measuring their business value, a new paper suggests.

Recommended Levels of Activity Rarely Achieved in Busy Workplace

European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Even a busy job may not provide enough exercise to meet current activity recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, according to a study. Note: 6000-7000 steps per day appears to constitute a healthy adult’s normal day, excluding planned exercise.

Employers and Workers Can Join Forces to Keep Diabetes Under Control

(Springer Science+Business Media) People with diabetes who enroll in a health plan tailored to their medical condition are more likely to stick to their medication and actively take charge of their own health care, research into the effectiveness of the Diabetes Health Plan finds.

Biking, Walking to Work Can Help Shed Pounds

Leaving your car at home and cycling, walking or using public transit to get to work could help you lose weight, according to a new study. The findings were published online May 7 in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.

Nurses Cut Stress 40 Percent with Relaxation Steps at Work

(Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center) It’s estimated that one million people a day miss work in the United States because they’re too stressed out. To help lower stress in the workplace, researchers conducted a study with staff members in a surgical intensive care unit. They found that a few simple on-the-job relaxation techniques cut stress levels by 40 percent and lowered the risk of burnout.

Shift Work Linked to Health Problems

Shift work may harm your health, a new study warns. Researchers examined data on nearly 1,600 people in Wisconsin, comparing the health of shift workers with those who worked a 9-to-5 schedule. The results showed that shift workers were more likely to be overweight than people who didn’t do shift work — 48 percent vs. 35 percent. Shift workers were also around 10 percent more likely to have sleep problems, get too little sleep, and be excessively sleepy.

Bystander CPR Linked to Better Return-to-Work Outcomes After Cardiac Arrest

New research from Denmark finds that more cardiac arrest survivors are returning to work, because more bystanders are performing CPR. “We already know CPR helps save lives — and now our findings suggest there is even more benefit in performing it,” study author Dr. Kristian Kragholm, a clinical assistant at Aalborg University Hospital and Aarhus University in Aalborg, said in an American Heart Association (AHA) news release. He is also a fellow at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, N.C.

Adults With Autism Fare Poorly in Job Interviews, Study Finds

“High-functioning” adults with autism may face significant communication challenges that could make landing a job difficult, new research from Canada suggests. The finding is based on an audio-analysis that examined the conversational skills of the adults as they embarked on a series of job interviews.
