No Deal Is Worth Dying For: OSHA Urges Retailers to Protect Employees

Recognizing the fact that holiday sales events, like Black Friday, have turned deadly in the past, OSHA is asking retailers to adopt crowd management plans.

OSHA is asking retail employers to implement safety measures to prevent workplace injuries during major sales events, including Black Friday. In 2008, a retail worker was trampled to death when shoppers rushed through the store to take advantage of holiday sales.

Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, shift work disorder and restless leg syndrome are common among firefighters, new research shows.

These conditions are linked with a higher risk for car accidents, a research team from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston suggests.

Firefighters with sleep disorders are also more likely to have chronic health issues, such as heart disease and diabetes. However, most firefighters with sleep disorders are not receiving the treatment they need, the study revealed.

Nurses Urge OSHA to Adopt California’s Ebola Safeguards

Registered nurses march on Nov. 12 in Washington, D.C., as part of Global Ebola Awareness Day.

The nation’s largest union of nurses is calling on OSHA and state-plan states to follow the “landmark mandatory safeguards” that California adopted last week to protect health care workers and the public from the Ebola virus.

On Friday, California safety and health authorities issued updated guidance requiring hospitals to provide head-to-toe PPE and comprehensive training for health care workers attending to Ebola patients. The guidance includes protocols that National Nurses United has been pushing in California and across the nation for two months, the union said.

Long-Term Shift Work May Drain the Brain, Study Reports

Rotating shifts for more than 10 years seemed to have the biggest impact, researchers say

Working non-standard hours — often called “shift work” — for many years is not only hard on the body, but may also dull the mind, new research suggests.

According to the study, those who do shift work for more than 10 years seem to have the equivalent of an extra 6.5 years of age-related decline in memory and thinking skills.

This study, however, only found an association between shift work and impairments in memory and thinking (sometimes called “cognition”). It didn’t prove that shift work was the definitive cause of those changes.

Employees With Disabilities: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You and Them

New regulations aimed at increasing the number of people with disabilities in the workforce will have a major impact on federal contractors

With just over one-quarter (26.3 percent) of working-age (16-64) people with disabilities participating in the workforce versus 71.9 percent of working-age people without disabilities, revisions to the regulations for Section 503 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act intended to reduce the disparity went into effect last March.

These changes impact federal contractors in a major way and are designed to improve employment outcomes for employees with disabilities. A key revision recommends contractors have a target of 7 percent of their workforce being employees with disabilities. The goal is to make management more aware of employing disabled workers and to provide some accountability.

Ebola Outbreak Shows Need for Stronger Protection for Health Workers

With OSHA unable to inspect all hospitals, workers must have a voice in addressing workplace hazards

Reports that a second Dallas hospital worker has been infected with the Ebola virus show the need for stronger and more comprehensive on-the-job protections for health care workers, says Mary Vogel, executive director of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH).

Acknowledging the victims of the recent Ebola outbreak, Vogel also noted that there are many serious hazards that impact healthcare workers every day.

Workplace Bullying Victims Share Their Stories

54 million workers, or 35% of U.S. employees, are targeted by a bully at some point in their careers

No one expects to go to work and feel as though they’re back on the school playground. Sadly, though, bullying is common for many workers.

Approximately 54 million workers, or 35 percent of U.S. employees, are targeted by a bully at some point in their careers, according to the Workplace Bullying Institute.

Even more tragic is the fact that many victims of workplace bullying suffer in silence.

Stacy Tye-Williams, an assistant professor of communications studies and English at Iowa State University, wanted to hear the stories of victims who haven’t reported their instances of workplace bullying. She found their narratives shocking and heartbreaking, and often disjointed and hard to follow.

Planning the Future of Occupational Health

The UK Council for Work and Health’s report delivers a vision of occupational health for the next 20 years

The council’s ongoing project to map out a blueprint of future workforce need and demand illustrates that the workforce challenges facing occupational health (OH) are severe.

The challenges of lifestyle diseases such as obesity and diabetes, the UK’s ageing working population and the increasing prevalence of chronic and long-term diseases would be challenging even if the OH profession was expanding and attracting new blood.

As chair of the council working group Professor John Harrison puts it: “[The report] is setting the scene around where we are now and what is going to be happening in the future. It is really just highlighting the fact the working world is changing and OH is changing with it.”

Occupational Health: Essential Information for New and Temp Staff

A wish list of what it would be nice to know before stepping into any department

As an experienced occupational health (OH) adviser working independently, Diane Romano-Woodward sometimes take on roles at short notice where a member of staff has suddenly become unwell. So that staff can “hit the ground running” and provide a service in new locations with very little preparation or support, she details below a wish list of what it would be nice to know before stepping into any department.

This is exactly the same documentation a manager would need to provide to a new permanent starter. Therefore, it is worth gathering the information in advance as it would also be useful in a crisis that would require temporary cover and, by its very nature, is unplanned. Under those circumstances, the manager will have other challenges in trying to manage client expectations and recruit temporary assistance, therefore it is wise to gather this information now.

How to Protect Health Workers in Conflicts, Crisis

Recruiting health workers with high levels of internal motivation is critical for work in difficult conditions

Recruiting health workers with high levels of internal motivation is critical for work in difficult conditions, where their personal security and health might be compromised, according to new research published today in Health Policy and Planning.

Health workers often witness the deaths of friends and colleagues during conflict situations and also face abduction, injury and death, themselves. Life history interviews with 26 health workers who lived through conflict in Northern Uganda reveal their resilience and how they coped by building trusting relationships with the community, seeking support from managers and elders, and finding strength from their faith and commitment to serve their community.

Namakula and Witter propose the following solutions to help protect and keep staff motivated during and after times of crisis, when they are likely to feel disconnected from social and professional support systems, lack supplies and face an increased work load with limited pay and personal insecurity:

Case Management and Return to Work: Opportunities and Challenges

Returning to work after an injury or illness can be challenging and costly.

The UK Government’s review of sickness absence shows that when employees lose contact with the labour market this can lead to worse health outcomes in many respects, (Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) response to sickness absence review paper, 2013). Case management has been used to help people regain their functionality for many years in several countries including the US and Australia. This article discusses how case management works, its benefits and the key elements that can help occupational health (OH) providers consider whether or not and how to include case management in their practice.

Evidence Mounts on Cancer Risk to Workers

Pilots, outdoor workers and workers on construction sites are being warned that they need to take extra care to protect themselves from skin cancer

The figures from PHE show that there was a 41% rise in admissions in the five-year period from 87,685 in 2007 to 123,808 in 2011, with a 30% increase in hospital admissions for melanoma.

But, it cautioned, this was partly a result of new guidance being issued to family doctors on treatment.

At the same time, a joint study by PHE, the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) and the Civil Aviation Authority has suggested the amount of UV-A ultraviolet light entering a cockpit during a two-hour flight from Gatwick to Malaga last year was two to 10 times higher than the level recommended for a flight lasting eight hours, and 50 times higher than levels on the ground.

Here’s a Tip that Can Help You Avoid Chronic Lower-Back Pain

The key to avoiding lower-back pain is keeping pressure off your lower lumbar discs

According to Tadhg O’Gara, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., the best way to prevent lower-back pain is to remember this simple mantra: “Arch is good, flat is bad.”

Lower-back pain is the No. 1 cause of job-related disability in the United States, and one of the leading causes of lost workdays. Only headaches and colds are more common than back pain.

Office Ergonomics Can Increase Job Satisfaction, Employee Retention

Training often occurs only after complaints are logged; proactive ergonomics programs beneficial

As the amount of time employees spend at their desks increases, so does musculoskeletal discomfort and other health issues associated with the office environment.

Although office ergonomics training programs have been shown to improve employee well-being and productivity, in many cases training occurs only after complaints are logged. New research to be presented at the HFES 2014 Annual Meeting in Chicago demonstrates that a comprehensive and proactive workplace ergonomics program can help to prevent discomfort and injury.

Alan Hedge, coauthor of “Proactive Office Ergonomics Really Works” and a professor at Cornell University’s Department of Design and Environmental Analysis, says, “Proactive programs are preventive and aim to design out problems before the workplace is built, making it much easier to maintain and manage.”

A Good Night’s Sleep May Mean a Good Day’s Work

Too much, too little slumber linked to raised number of sick days

Getting enough sleep each night may mean you’re less likely to take time off from work due to illness, a new study suggests.

The study included more than 3,700 people in Finland, aged 30 to 64, who were followed for an average of seven years.

Those who slept less than six hours or more than nine hours a night were much more likely to have extended absences from work due to illness, the investigators found. People with the lowest risk for taking time off from work due to sickness were those who slept between seven and eight hours a night.

The researchers even narrowed the ideal amount of nightly sleep for workers down to seven hours, 38 minutes for women, and seven hours, 46 minutes for men, according to the study in the September issue of the journal Sleep.

The team also found that insomnia-related symptoms — waking early in the morning, feeling more tired than others and using sleeping pills — were all linked with a significant increase in time off from work due to illness.

Healthcare Workers Wash Hands More Often When in Presence of Peers

Nationally, hand hygiene adherence by healthcare workers remains staggeringly low, despite its critical importance in infection control.

A study in the October issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), found that healthcare workers’ adherence to hand hygiene is better when other workers are nearby.

“Social network effects, or peer effects, have been associated with smoking, obesity, happiness and worker productivity. As we found, this influence extends to hand hygiene compliance, too,” said Philip Polgreen, MD, an author of the study. “Healthcare workers’ proximity to their peers had a positive effect on their hand hygiene adherence.”

Policy Boosts Flu Vaccination Rates Among Health Care Workers

Big hurdle was addressing myths associated with the vaccine and reassuring employees of safety

Hospitals can greatly improve their flu vaccination rate among health care workers by using a mandatory employee vaccination policy, according to a study.

Researchers say the health system studied achieved employee vaccination rates of 99 percent in the first two years of its mandatory policy, in which annual vaccination compliance is a condition of employment.

How to Undertake a Risk Assessment Prior to Travel

Key potential hazards and challenges, which could initially appear harmless, should be considered

Risk assessment is an integral component of the pre-travel health assessment, and will help reduce the risk of illness or injury in travellers. It allows the identification of potential health risks, and helps determine the advice and preventive strategies for the traveller.

The key to risk assessment is to identify and characterise material risks to health that may require control, and to allow the traveller to make informed decisions and choices regarding preventive measures and interventions without unnecessary adverse events, cost or inconvenience.

Pilots, Cabin Crews Face Higher Risk of Skin Cancer, Study Says

But, it’s not clear whether flying is to blame

Shift Workers Use Drugs to Sleep, Wake

But questions about benefits, risks of these medications linger

Many shift workers take drugs to sleep or stay awake despite lingering questions about their benefits and risks, researchers report.

The study authors analyzed the findings of 15 clinical trials that included a total of 718 people. Nine of the trials found that the over-the-counter hormone drug melatonin helped shift workers sleep about 24 minutes longer during the night or day, but did not help them get to sleep quicker.

One study looked at the hypnotic drug zopiclone, and found that it was no more effective than an inactive placebo at helping shift workers sleep during the day.

The other five studies assessed the effects of caffeine and the drugs modafinil and armodafinil, which are prescribed for sleepiness during night shifts. Caffeine reduced sleepiness during night shifts when workers also took naps before shifts, the investigators found.

Lack of Protective Gear Leaves Medics at Risk in Ebola Outbreak

Shortages of gloves, masks existed in Liberia, Sierra Leone years before latest epidemic

Health care workers in poor nations often do not have enough protective gear to keep them safe from being infected with blood-borne viruses such as Ebola and HIV, a new study shows.

While the study was conducted before the current Ebola outbreak began in West Africa last spring, its findings are confirmed in statistics released Monday by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Natural Light in Office Boosts Health

Exposure to light is beneficial to your health via its effects on mood, alertness and metabolism

Office workers with more light exposure at the office had longer sleep duration, better sleep quality, more physical activity and better quality of life compared to office workers with less light exposure in the workplace, reports a new study from Northwestern Medicine and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The study highlights the importance of exposure to natural light to employee health and the priority architectural designs of office environments should place on natural daylight exposure for workers, the study authors said.

Simple Plan is Key to Screen Breaks

Environmental and behavioral interventions help desk-bound employees take postural breaks

A simple plan of action could be an easy way for employers to ensure that workers take regular screen breaks, a study funded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health has concluded.

The institute joined forces with academics at Derby University to investigate what can be done to encourage workers to take more postural breaks.

Researchers analysed the impact of different techniques designed to change workers’ behavior, including pre-planning when to take breaks and using a buzzer to remind staff to change their posture after an hour’s inactivity.

Planning breaks in this way led to a meaningful increase in postural changes over a day, it found.

Some Jobs Harder on the Heart

But having to search for work may be just as stressful, unhealthy, researchers add

Stress at work may raise your risk of heart attack and stroke, particularly if you work in the service industry or have a blue-collar job, U.S. health officials reported Thursday.

But being unemployed might be just as unhealthy, they added.

“Workplace factors that increase risk include job stress, exposure to air pollution — like dust and secondhand smoke — and noise,” explained lead researcher Dr. Sara Luckhaupt, from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“These workers would benefit from health programs that combine reducing occupational risk factors like job stress with health promotion activities like smoking cessation,” she said.

Obesity Linked to Low Endurance

A new study investigated the ergonomic effects of obesity-related functional performance impairment

A new study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (JOEH) found that workers who are obese may have significantly shorter endurance times when performing workplace tasks, compared with their non-obese counterparts.

The study, conducted at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., examined the endurance of 32 individuals who completed three distinct tasks that involved a range of upper extremity demands – hand grip, intermittent shoulder elevation, and a simulated assembly operation. Each task involved periods of work and rest and included pacing demands similar to those experienced by workers in manufacturing settings. The individual were divided into four categories: non-obese young, obese young, non-obese older, and obese older.

Shift Work Tied to Type 2 Diabetes

Shift workers may be at higher risk for type 2 diabetes compared to people not on such schedules

Shift workers, especially men, may be at higher risk for type 2 diabetes compared to people not on such schedules, a new study suggests. Also at special risk are shift workers who don’t work on a set schedule, with shifts moving around at various times of the day.

The findings are “not at all surprising,” said one expert, Dr. Alan Manevitz, a clinical psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

“Physicians have long known that working shifts disrupts many key body chemicals, creating a ripple effect that can lead to ailments such as gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disease and even cancer,” he said. “Now type 2 diabetes can be added to this considerable list.”

In the new review, researchers analyzed data from 12 international studies involving more than 226,500 people.

Nursing Shortage May Be Less Serious

Delayed retirement of experienced nurses and surge in new nursing graduates ease predicted shortage

The nation’s supply of registered nurses has been growing faster than expected, largely because baby boomers in nursing are working longer than ever before, according to a new study.

Due to both the delayed retirement of experienced nurses and a surge in new nursing graduates, there were almost 3 million nurses in the United States in 2012, about half a million more than estimated a decade ago.

Exactly why baby boomer nurses aren’t retiring isn’t known. But it could be that they are part of a trend among other Americans, particularly women, said David Auerbach, senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation in Boston.
